If you’re considering having dermabrasion or microdermabrasion, you need to understand the procedures and their impacts on your body fully before you consent.

After having dermabrasion, there will be some discomfort. Your skin will feel like it’s been scraped or burned for a few days. Fortunately, the doctor who handles the procedure can prescribe medicine that will control or help control the discomfort. Within 7 to 10 days, you should be fairly well healed up.

When your new skin comes in, it will be an unpleasant pink color at first that will gradually adjust to your normal color. This can take 6 to 8 weeks, but makeup can be used to cover this once the skin is completely healed.

You can go about your normal life after 7 to 14 days of healing. But you’ll need to avoid being in the sun -- even though a window -- and always use a heavy sunscreen, hat and other protection for your skin when you must be outside.

After the less invasive microdermabrasion procedure, expect your skin to feel dry and tight, like after a windburn or sunburn. It will also be pink for a day or two. Using moisturizer is usually all that’s necessary to alleviate any unpleasantness. But you can’t wear makeup for at least 24 hours.

Side effects you could experience from either procedure include formation of scars, uneven skin coloring and even infection. With microdermabrasion, you could experience some irritation in your eyes if crystals are not cleaned away properly.

It is usually suggested that you not drink alcohol or take aspirin for several days after a procedure. Smoking is also prohibited.

When you understand what you’re getting yourself into and what you need to do to make sure you have the best results, you can get remarkable positive impact from your dermabrasion and microdermabrasion procedures that can make you look years younger and a lot better.
